The Quakes put in work–specifically demolition–on Saturday versus their USL affiliate: Reno 1868 FC. The Quakes scored early and often in the first half with Danny Hoesen netting the first two goals at 5′ & 21′, and new DP Magnus Eriksson scoring the second two at 26′ and 37′ to give San Jose a 4-0 win.

The most important part of the scoreline is not the four goals, but the clean-sheet. The Quakes defense was holier than the Pope on Easter at times last season, with San Jose surrendering over 60 regular season goals. Thus far in 2018, the Quakes have only allowed one goal in three preseason games.

The second take-away has to be the performances of Danny Hoesen and Magnus Eriksson. Eriksson scored in the open-practice scrimmage a few weeks ago, and had the brace on Saturday. Hoesen proved that he is still in his late-season 2017 form. Both should be a huge boon the Quakes offense.

Third, Wondo had yet to score, and that should be somewhat concerning. Wondo had a few opportunities, including a sitter that he sent over the crossbar in the first half. As he chases after the league’s scoring record, I would not expect new head coach Mikael Stahre to have a long leash for the captain if his scoring drought continues into the season. Let’s hope Wondo’s rust wears off soon, and he’s able to return to form by the time March hits.

Notably absent was Quakes DP midfield Simon Dawkins, and New York Cosmos attacking midfield Eric Calvillo. Both came into preseason fighting for a spot on the 23-man roster, and neither featured in the afternoon lineup.

The Quakes play the L.A. Galaxy on Saturday at Orange County Great Park.
