The United States Women’s National Team will renew their rivalry with Canada at Avaya Stadium next weekend. In preparation for the match, Jill Ellis announced her roster, which includes a few new faces that might be making appearances to qualify for the France, 2019 World Cup.
GOALKEEPERS (4): Jane Campbell (Houston Dash), Adrianna Franch (Portland Thorns), Ashlyn Harris (Orlando Pride), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars)
DEFENDERS (8): Abby Dahlkemper (NC Courage), Sofia Huerta (Chicago Red Stars), Kelley O’Hara (Sky Blue FC), Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City), Casey Short (Chicago Red Stars), Taylor Smith (NC Courage), Emily Sonnett (Portland Thorns FC), Chioma Ubogagu (Orlando Pride)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Julie Ertz (Chicago Red Stars), Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns FC), Carli Lloyd (Houston Dash), Allie Long (Portland Thorns FC), Samantha Mewis (NC Courage), Andi Sullivan (Stanford)
FORWARDS (5): Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns FC), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Christen Press (Chicago Red Stars), Megan Rapinoe (Seattle Reign FC), Lynn Williams (NC Courage)
It will be English-born-but-Texas-raised Chioma Ubogagu’s first call-up. Ogobagu normally plays forward for her club teams, which included the Arsenal women’s senior team in 2015, the Houston Dash in 2016, and her current club, Orlando Pride. However, in this call-up, she is listed as a defender, which would be the second time Ellis has experimented with a forward-to-defender experiment, a-la Sofia Huerta.
Two Portland Thorns players receive invites after missing call-ups versus South Korea: midfielder Emily Sonnett (currently on loan in Autralia) and ‘keeper Adrianna Franch.
Stanford stand-out senior Andi Sullivan received an invite, and should see some playing time in the midfield. The Stanford Cardinal are currently in first in the Pac-12 with an overall record of 27-1, and league record of 10-0.
The game will take place at Avaya Stadium on Sunday, November 12 at 6:00pm.
