Goodbye, Burlingame Dragons

October 3, 2017

The Burlingame Dragons, the Earthquakes PDL affiliate team, will not return for 2018.

In an article posted on NBC Sports, the team revealed that its bid to be a USL expansion was met with logistical problems in trying to find a venue while the new stadium would be built, so the group withdrew its bid. Without the potential of entering into the USL, the ownership group also pulled the plug on the team that would have made the transition, the Dragons.

During the 2016 season, Assistant Coach Eric Bucchere of the Quakes USL affiliate Reno 1868 FC was the head coach of the Dragons. Former Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon took over for Bucchere in 2017. MLS players such as Nick Lima and Josh Smith (of the New England Revolution) were also Dragon alums before making the transition into MLS.

The Dragons lasted for three seasons, earning first place in the regular season during the 2015 season.
