In a somewhat surprising move, the L.A. Galaxy have hired former Quakes Head Coach Dom Kinnear as an assistant coach under Sigi Schmid.
Both Kinnear and Schmid left their respective teams during tumultous times. Schmid was fired last season by the Seattle Sounders after Seattle began the season with a 6-12-2 record; Seattle managed to win the MLS Cup after Schmid’s dismissal. Likewise, Dom Kinnear was overseeing a Quakes team that had not made the playoffs since 2012, and was staring at another potential season without the playoffs in 2017–the Quakes were in fifth place when Kinnear was fired, and currently sit in sixth place.
The move is surprising in that Kinnear is taking an assistant’s role, a position he has not held since his first stint with the San Jose Earthquakes in the early 2000’s. Kinnear could be positioning himself to take over for the Galaxy if Schmid leaves at the end of the season, which is very likely given Schmid’s 0-4-1 record since his arrival. Or Kinnear may simply be keeping himself busy in the coaching ranks and waiting for a potential position to open up at another club.
