Former Earthquakes Head Coach Frank Yallop resigned from the Phoenix Rising Football Club, citing a desire to return to his family in Northern California.
The move is a bit shocking, and cause for speculation. Phoenix Rising recently signed aged superstar Didier Drogba, who became part of Phoenix Rising FC’s ownership group, a move which could bolster their MLS expansion bid. The move also comes on the heels of a disastrous Earthquakes start to 2017, which has many fans expressing their disdain for third-year head coach Dom Kinnear’s resignation via the #KinnearOut hashtag.
Could Yallop be returning to Northern California to take over for Kinnear or possibly return to San Jose in an advisory capacity? It seems a little more than coincidental, especially coming the first business day after Kinnear’s former team, the Houston Dynamo, shutout his Quakes 2-0. It is also very unusual for a coach to leave a team voluntarily mid-season, especially after two straight wins (Phoenix Rising currently sits a 2-2-0 in the USL). It could be coincidence, or a sign of things to come.
