Zebra of the Match: Montreal

When playing a futbol match the MLS athlete and coaches will say it doesn’t matter who the referee is, but ask the fans and they will give a completely different answer. The fans will say some referees are out to pick on their club and favor another. This weekend is Week 1 of the MLS season and the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) has had the referees set up since February 10th for the opening contests. Head referee for the Quakes versus Impact match up is veteran official Baldomero Toledo.

Toledo has donned the zebra shirt for the MLS since 2004 season and has also refereed for international competitions. In 13 years with the league he’s officiated 21 Quakes games and has given 30 yellows and 6 red cards for the men from San Jose. In last year’s campaign he gave a whopping four yellow cards to the Quakes versus the Sounders in his sole game officiating San Jose. In 16 out of the 17 regular season matches last year, Toledo gave out at least one yellow card with the exception of the game he did against FC Dallas versus Chicago Fire.

With the announcement of knowing the refs ahead of time, it will be curious to see if the San Jose Earthquakes change their playing style and question themselves when to tackle soft or go in hard for the ball.

Referee: Baldomero Toledo Assistant Ref1:Corey Parker. AR2:Gianni Facchini. 4th:Daniel Radford.
