The Quakes will play FC Dallas for the second time this season at home. The first game could/should have been been a victory, but a Shaun Francis foul inside the box set up a Tesho Akindele PK goal and Victor Bernardez own-goal was the equalizer in a 2-2 draw in Frisco.
Theoretically the Quakes should win: they’re playing at home and should have already beaten Dallas on the road. But the Quakes are missing four key pieces of their starting lineup due to Copa call-ups: midfielders Alberto Quintero, Anibal Godoy, Simon Dawkins, and most of all forward/captain Chris Wondolowski. (Kip Colvey is also on international duty, but probably would not have made the 18) The Quakes are also without starting CB Clarence Goodson and million-dollar IR All-Star Innocent.
Dallas, on the other hand, will be missing Maynor Figueroa and Carlos Gruiezo for Copa Competition. Dallas center-back Matt Hedges is questionable, and I would not be surprised to see him get the starting nod. Dallas is also the best road team in Western conference: they lead in wins (three), and are tied with Colorado for overall road points (nine). Dallas has also not lost to the Quakes in their five previous matches. Advantage: Dallas.
Line Up Predictions
The good news is that Cordell Cato and Quincy Amarikwa are back, and will probably be in the starting XI. I’m predicting a diamond 4-4-2 with Wynne, Imperiale, Muma, and Jordan Stewart on the back line (welcome back, Jordan!), Fatai at the 6, Cordell on the right wing, MPG in the middle, Shea on the left wing, with Barrett and Quincy up top. To be honest, it’s anyone’s guess as to how Dom will play triage with so many missing players.
FC Dallas will probably keep running their usual 4-4-2 with Mauro Rosales playing in place of Gruezo. Expect to see Michael Barrios with Tesho Akindele at forward (eight goals between the two), Fabian Castillo and Ryan Hollingshead on the wings, and Victor Ulloa in the mid. Defensively I’m predicting the return of Hedges to the lineup, with Zach Loyd. I doubt former Quake Atiba Harris will start at RW, but you never know. Chris Seitz will be in goal.
No Wondo, no Simon, no Godoy, no Quintero. Those four players have accounted for 13 of San Jose’s 16 goals this season. I really want to see the Quakes pull off a 1-0 victory, but I don’t know if we have the defensive prowess to stop a relentless Dallas attack, nor do I think we have the offensive tools to score more than a goal, so I’m guessing a 2-1 FC Dallas victory, with goals by Castillo and Hollingshead. I also think the Quakes score late with an Adam Jahn sub goal, because why not?
DP Innocent has been on the Quakes squad for 46 regular season games, or 4,190 minutes of games. Of those 4,190 eligible minutes, he has logged 597 active minutes and has not played for 3,593 minutes. The Quakes have paid Innocent roughly $1.6 million dollars in salary (1.3 last year, conservatively 300K this year, probably more).
When you crunch the numbers, the Quakes pay Innocent $26,718.62/hour for every hour he sits on the bench during a Quakes game. Assuming he doesn’t play tonight (per MLS injury report, he’s out), he will make $40,077.93 for doing absolutely nothing. (For those of you that want to know how much you pay NOT to see Innocent per game, it’s roughly $2.23 per ticket).
I defy ANYONE to find a bigger DP bust than Innocent’s tour with San Jose. It has been a complete disaster.
Game is at 7:30pm at Avaya Stadium. Free Parking Guide, anyone?
