The Quakes play Portland a second time today. In the previous meeting, the Quakes came away with the 2-1 victory despite Caleb Porter pointing out his side had the better chances. Portland will still be without centerback Liam Ridgewell, and will be without midfielder Darlington Nagbe after a vicious stomp from Nigel de Jong last week put in him a wheelchair. Alvas Powell is also out 6-8 weeks. In other words, Portland will be missing not one, but three key pieces to their championship squad. Advantage #1 for San Jose.
Advantage #2 for San Jose: Both Portland and San Jose are coming off midweek games, so expect both sides to rest some starters. San Jose has the depth for this situation whereas Portland will rely on players like Ben Zemanski (who is listed as doubtful), Ned Grabavoy, and Taylor Peay to fill the gap.
Line Up Predictions
I am predicting Marvell Wynne gets a rest in favor of Kofi Sarkodie. I’m also expecting Tommy Thompson to get a rest as he didn’t look his best on Wednesday and might need it. It might also be a first start for Innocent if Head Coach Dom Kinnear feels that Quincy or Wondo should get some rest as well. With that said, I’m predicting a 4-1-3-2 with Sarkodie, Muma, Imperiale, and Francis on the back-line, Fatai at the pivot, Dawkins, MPG, and Alberto Quintero in the middle, Wondo and Innocent up top. I wouldn’t be surprised if Shea Salinas also gets the start as he’s impressed with every appearance this season and has played off the bench, so should be rested headed into the match.
Look for Fanendo Adi to start for Portland, with Darren Mattocks and Lucas Melano to challenge the left-back position for the Quakes. I do not expect Asprilla to play as he’s questionable, but I would expect Diego Chara to start as he has yet to get any points this season and needs to start producing for Portland. Defensively I wouldn’t be surprised if Jewsbury (35 year old!) gets a start since both Powell and Ridgewell will be out, but only go 60. Jermaine Taylor and Zarek Valentin should also start.
Final Score Predictions
Well, it’s a pretty banged up Portland team, and they are not off to the best start. But I fear that Goodson is our only answer to Fanendo Adi, and we’re missing Clarence tonight. Final score: 2-2.
There will be viewing parties tonight! Rookies in San Jose will have Marc Pelosi, and Golden State Brewery will also host fans. I’ll be at Golden State. 🙂 Game time: 730pm.
