The Earthquakes announced the release of JJ Koval today. Koval was a first-round pick of the 2014 MLS draft, but his position at defensive-mid was challenged with the arrival of Godoy, Fatai, and Pelosi over the past year. He was experimented at center-back, but with Silva and Imperiale ready to fill in if/when needed, JJ was simply too much space on the 28-man roster.
JJ’s waiver clears the way for the Quakes to sign preseason standout Kip Colvey, and possibly renegotiate Matias Perez Garcia’s contract to a non-DP status.
I would expect Koval to land somewhere soon, just not in MLS where the team rosters are almost set. Likely western candidates include USL teams such Sacramento, Timbers 2, Sounders 2, Galaxy 2, or even Arizona United FC (coached by former Quakes head coach Frank Yallop). JJ would be eligible to sign with Burlingame Dragons FC for a short-term stint before moving on to another team as he is still 23 years old.
Expect more announcements soon about the final roster, including cuts of Ty Thompson and Patrick Hodan.
Thank you for your contributions to the team, JJ!
