In the first significant signing of the off-season, the Quakes signed former Sounders forward Chad Barrett today. He will join a stable of Quakes forwards, including Wondo, Quincy, Jahn, Lenny, Sherrod, Tommy, and Innocent. That’s a lot of depth for a position which fields typically two, sometimes three, players per game.
Quite simply, there are too many forwards, and the end may be nigh for Jahn, Sherrod, or especially Lenny. Jahn and Sherrod did not produce much last year, but they have upside: both are young, healthy, and take up relatively little cap space. Lenny is about to hit the wrong side of 30, has been plagued with knee injuries/surgeries, and his cap hit was huge against the club last season. If someone has to go, it’s probably going to be Lenny. 🙁
There are also rumors that Lenny is ready to hang ’em up for good due to his knee, and this signing may be the Quakes getting a replacement in place before having to look in the Super Draft. Don’t be surprised to see a press-release soon about Lenny’s departure/retirement.
So with a bit of a heavy heart, welcome to the team, Chad! I look forward to seeing you out there in the blue and black of San Jose. 🙂
