Pre-Match Report: Colorado Rapids

May 8, 2015

The Quakes (4-4-1) finish a three-games-in-eight-days road-trip with a visit to “The Dick,” aka Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, in Commerce City, Colorado to face the Colorado Rapids (1-2-6).*

The Quakes suffered a huge blow to the offense this week when DP Innocent Emeghara successfully underwent surgery to repair a mesiscus tear in his knee.  He will be out 4-6 months, which means for all intents and purposes, his season is done.

Colorado Scouting Report

Despite sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference table, the Quakes and Colorado have very similar numbers.**  Colorado has out-shot San Jose 100-79, with 40 on target to San Jose’s 31.  Colorado has conceded just eight goals to San Jose’s 10.  San Jose has scored nine goals to Colorado’s eight.  Don’t let their respective records fool you into thinking San Jose should roll over Colorado, especially since this is their third game since last Friday!

Look for Gabriel Torres, who has four goals this season, up top.  He will be set up by Dillon Powers, who is tied for second with four assists this season, as the CAM.  If the Quakes contain Powers, they control the game.  Also watch out for former Quakes DM Sam Cronin.  I am expecting Colorado to use a 4-2-3-1.

What to Expect

With Innocent out and Alashe recovering from a hit on Tuesday, you would think Dom would do something different, but my guess is that he will probably run the 4-3-3 again.  I would expect Jahn to start at forward in place of Innocent, with Shea and Nyassi.  I would love to see Tommy start at mid where Wondo has been starting, since Tommy is a natural ball-controller who can move it quickly, but Wondo will probably stay at mid with MPG and Koval.  I don’t think Alashe will get the start due to his injury last game, but might be able to be used as a sub for Koval.  I also expect Dom to start Stewart on the back-line in place of Cato, who will probably be brought on as a sub for Nyassi or MPG, with Wynne (happy birthday, Marvell!), Goodson, and Bernardez.

Final Score Prediction

I still have faith in our defense as one of the best in the league, so I don’t expect Colorado to score, unless it’s a PK (and even then, we saw what Bingham can do!).  I also have seen a disturbing trend in the lack of offense we have been able to produce over the past several weeks, especially with Innocent out of action.  If Colorado uses the 4-2-3-1, they will control the ball and pace of play, which limits our offense even more.

My final score guess: 0-0 draw.

Quakes Injuries:
  • Innocent (F)
  • Mark Sherrod (F) – he might be able to play as he’s traveling with the team!
  • Lenny (F)
  • Jean Baptiste Pierazzi (DM)
  • Shaun Francis (D)
Viewing Parties!

Game Time: Friday (5/8) at 7:00pm on Univision Deportes

*Disclaimer: I don’t really know if it’s called The Dick, just thought any sporting venue which is named after male genitalia is inherently humorous.
