Minnesota United FC Almost a Sure Thing

March 16, 2015

MLS recently confirmed they are in “advanced discussions” with Minnesota United, home to USMNT player Miguel Ibarra, to be the next MLS expansion team.

The interest began with Ibarra (MLS would own his rights if Minnesota comes into the league), but Minnesota’s biggest competition was Sacramento Republic FC, another team with a huge fan base and an already-approved downtown stadium site, something Minnesota lacked.  Yet once Minnesota was approved for their own $150 million downtown stadium, Ibarra tipped the scales in Minnesota’s favor.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, and MLS Commish Don Garber hinted that there may be room for one more team as their goal of 24 clubs by 2020 would be missing one final team (Minnesota grows the total number of teams to 23), leaving open the possibility of Sacramento Republic FC as the 24th and final team.
